We recently won a new supply contract for medium volume production of a bespoke pump casting in ductile iron (to see our full range of standard metals please follow this link). The initial batch is to be 11,000 units and a quick turnaround was required as the items are for export.

Production

Although a small pump casting, weighing just under 1kg, it was not without its own complexities and difficulties. The casting had to have an excellent surface finish due to the critical nature of the seating face. Also, due to the CT9 specification, the core had to be made using a shell core machine in order to guarantee the dimensional accuracy of the casting and ensure its structural integrity. In order to guarantee that production deadlines were met we made the castings in our smallest airset plant with 4 pattern plates circling round a semi-automated mixer.

This plant was specifically designed for this type of production specialising in the production of smaller engineering castings. The end quality of the castings was underpinned by our industry accreditation for both ISO:9001 and RISQS.

Although these quantities are not unusual at Ballantines, we are more used to producing smaller volume batch runs, with the majority of our engineering castings being produced in lower quantities and at higher weights. This is a rather new endeavour for us and we look forward to producing these castings for years to come.
